The “El Transcantábrico” route starts in Santiago de Compostela, a magnificent city in the northwest corner of Spain and takes you on an eight day luxury train trip to one of the most stunning and delicate Basque town of San Sebastián. Santiago de Compostela is known as the site where St. James was buried and the route of Santiago attracts pilgrims from around the world meeting there for more than 1000 years, The most interesting points are the Plaza del Obradoiro, Platerías and the Cathedral. After lunch a bus will take you to Corunna where the El Transcantábrico train waits you at Ferrol Station.

The El Transcantábrico is as small train that can take 48 passengers and runs on a narrow gauge railway with only 0,914 meters (3 feet) between rails. Four of the ten carriages are saloon cars prepared for bar, dancing, and breakfast. The suite compartments have a double bed, wardrobe, writing desk, telephone and private bathrooms with hydro sauna, steam bath and toilet. The standard compartments have bunk beds. There are two WC and showers, shared between the six rooms.

You will be taken on a 1000 kilometres (620 miles) journey on the Cantabric coast from
Galicia to the Basque coutry trough steep clifs, mountains, sandy beaches and extensive wetlands.

Only breakfast will be served on the train, lunch and dinner will always be served in local restaurants and you will taste some excelent local cuisine and wines (Rioja). The train stands each night in a different station letting you have a nice and confortably night without disturbing track clatter. Every morning you will have breakfast while the train crosses valleys, fjords, natural parks, bridges and fishing towns of the northern Spain coast and countryside.

The train average speed is 50 kilometres (31 miles) per hour.

The route passes by the small fishing towns of Ribadeo and Cudillero, Oviedo (Asturias capital), Gijón, Picos da Europa National Park, Covadonga Sanctuary, Llanes, Canyon of La Hermida, Santo Toribio de Liebana, Santillana del Mar, Altamira Caves, Santander, Laredo with a small Ferry excursion to Santoña, and Bilbao with the famous Guggenheim museum designed by Frank Gehry and you will be finnaly taken by bus to San Sebastián.
